How Is the XAUUSD Overnight Fee Calculated? First Check Long/Short Rates, Settlement Time, and Triple-Charge Days

The overnight financing cost of gold CFDs can affect the net result of holding a position for several days. This explains the difference between spread, commission, and overnight fee, and how to verify them in the contract specifications and statements.

When beginners compare gold trading costs, they often look at the spread first, then ask whether there is a commission, but overlook the overnight financing adjustment after a position crosses the platform's settlement time. When holding for several days, ignoring it will make backtests and real statements fail to match. This article discusses the inspection method for the gold CFD XAUUSD, and does not provide the specific overnight rate of any platform today. Rates, charge days, and account terms will change, and the contract specifications and trading records of the actual account must prevail.

Where Does the Overnight Fee Come From

A CFD is an over-the-counter contract. Traders pay margin to obtain price exposure and do not pay the full value of one ounce of gold. When a position crosses the daily settlement time, the platform may include an overnight adjustment based on the position direction, notional size, and the financing rules at that time. The result may be a deduction, or under some conditions a credit. CME's comparison of CFDs and futures points out that CFDs may have overnight financing costs in addition to the spread; the carrying cost of futures is more reflected in the term price structure. The quotation methods and risk mechanisms of the two products are different, and one cannot compare only the "zero commission" label on the screen.

The most important distinction here is that spread, commission, and overnight fee are not the same amount of money. The spread is reflected between the bid and ask prices, commission may be charged separately on opening and closing, and the overnight fee is related to whether the position crosses the specified settlement time. Even if the market eventually moves in the expected direction, if the gross profit is less than these costs, the net result may still be negative. Margin occupation is not the cost itself, and low margin must not be misread as low risk.

Three Steps to Check Your Own Account

Step one: on the platform you use, open the XAUUSD contract specifications and look for "Swap Long," "Swap Short," or the overnight rate, charging method, triple-charge day, and server time. Long and short may differ, and metals and forex currency pairs may also differ. EBC's publicly available gold trading description reminds that the current long and short overnight rates and applicable days should be checked in the XAUUSD contract specifications; its explanation of forex triple overnight fees also emphasizes that currency pairs and the service provider's settlement arrangements affect the actual dates. One cannot mechanically apply "forex commonly triple on Wednesday" to all gold contracts or all accounts.

Step two: before opening a position, estimate the number of days you may hold, rather than only looking at the spread afterward. For example: if an account charges USD 7 per night for a hypothetical position during a certain period, the cumulative deduction for holding for two consecutive nights is USD 14; if it crosses a settlement day counted as three days, that day at the same single-day amount for illustration is USD 21. This is only an arithmetic demonstration and does not represent EBC, any platform, or today's real rate; actual charges are also affected by lot size, account currency conversion, rate changes, and holidays. If you do not know whether the unit is "currency amount per lot" or "points," do not directly treat the number on the screen as US dollars.

Step three: after trading, verify the actual deduction from historical orders or account statements. List the execution spread, opening and closing commissions, and overnight adjustment separately, and compare them with the estimate made before opening the position. If the difference is large, check whether the platform server's settlement boundary was crossed, whether there were weekend or holiday adjustments, whether the contract unit was misunderstood, and whether the rate was updated during the holding period. Do not infer from a webpage introduction alone that your account is necessarily charged the same number.

Why Triple-Charge Days Are Easily Misunderstood

The so-called "triple" usually processes the financing time corresponding to non-trading days on one settlement day, and does not mean that prices will fluctuate three times on that day. The specific day depends on the product's settlement rules, the service provider's arrangements, and the account terms. A risk disclosure document from EBC mentions that certain CFDs charge triple overnight fees on Friday; another document for a different entity also states the corresponding arrangement. This shows that it is especially important to check the legal entity and contract specifications applicable to your own account, and one should not treat a general article as a unified fee schedule for all clients.

Impact on Strategy and Risk Control

If you plan to hold a position over the weekend, include potential overnight fees, gaps, spread widening, and inability to execute at preset prices in the risk budget before trading. When backtesting an EA, also confirm whether the backtest actually includes the overnight rate of the corresponding instrument, and do not look only at the total return curve. Cost checking is not to prove that a platform is necessarily expensive or cheap, but to judge whether your holding period, position, and expected volatility can cover all costs. Rates may change with market conditions, and any calculation is only an ex-ante estimate; leveraged trading may amplify losses.
