What is the difference between MT4 gold Buy Limit and Buy Stop? Check Bid and Ask before a pending order triggers

Summary: When trading gold on MT4, Buy Limit and Buy Stop both pre-set buy conditions, but one corresponds to a pullback and the other to an upside breakout. Looking only at price lines on the chart can easily lead to misjudging why a pending order has not yet triggered. This article uses teaching examples to explain the four types of pending orders, bid and ask quotes, and checking steps; the examples do not represent live market conditions.

First distinguish "buy the pullback" from "buy the breakout"

The four basic pending orders in MT4 are Buy Limit, Buy Stop, Sell Limit, and Sell Stop. Buy Limit is typically used to plan a buy below the current ask price while waiting for a pullback; Buy Stop is typically used to plan a buy above the current ask price while waiting for an upside breakout. The sell side is the opposite: Sell Limit is used to wait for price to rebound to a higher level before selling, and Sell Stop is used to wait for a breakdown to a lower level before selling. The word "plan" here refers only to the order conditions; price reaching the set area does not guarantee that it will then reverse or continue.

Before choosing a type, first write down the trading hypothesis clearly: do you want to wait for a retest before buying, or wait for a breakout before buying? These two ideas correspond to different failure scenarios. A pullback may break below the original support, and a breakout may quickly fall back. Mistakenly choosing Buy Stop as Buy Limit may cause the order to be rejected by the platform, or make the actual trading logic inconsistent with the original plan. Different accounts may also set a minimum distance between pending orders and the current price, so chart position alone cannot determine that an order can definitely be submitted.

Why the chart touches the line but the buy order still does not trigger

MT4 help documentation states that common chart candlesticks are drawn by default according to Bid (sell quote), and an Ask (buy quote) line can be displayed in settings. Execution in the buy direction is related to Ask, and the sell direction is related to Bid; the difference between the two is the spread. Therefore, seeing a candlestick high touch a certain buy pending order price does not mean that Ask reached that price exactly in the way you imagine. When checking an order, record the order type, set price, current Bid, Ask, and spread at the same time, rather than only capturing one wick of a candlestick.

Teaching illustration, not live market data: assume the screen shows Bid at 100.00 and Ask at 100.20, with a spread of 0.20. If you plan to wait for a buy breakout at a higher price, you should set Buy Stop by reference to Ask and the distance allowed by the platform, and you must not mistake 100.10 on the Bid chart for the buy price having already reached 100.10. The numbers only demonstrate the relationship between the two quotes; they are not gold quotes, platform fee rates, or available order placement prices. The spread may also widen during market volatility, and the previously estimated trigger and execution levels will change accordingly.

In what order should you check in MT4

Step one, open "New Order," select the correct XAUUSD and account, and then switch the order type to "Pending Order." Step two, confirm the direction and Limit or Stop, and fill in the planned trigger price, lot size, optional stop loss and take profit, and expiration time. Step three, before clicking submit, recheck the current Bid, Ask, spread, contract minimum price increment, and the platform-prompted minimum pending order distance; these requirements are subject to what your own account displays at the time. Step four, after the order enters "Terminal—Trade," check whether it is in a pending-trigger state or has already converted into a position.

MT4 official help states that after a pending order is submitted, it is first received by the broker and then converted into a position when conditions are met; the stop loss and take profit on a pending order are protective conditions that take effect as the position is established, and one must not mistakenly think that a pending order that has not yet triggered already has a position being traded. An expiration time can also be set, and pending orders that expire without triggering will be deleted. After a plan becomes invalid, old pending orders should be checked and canceled promptly to avoid an unexpected entry later when the market reaches the price.

Triggering does not mean execution at the expected price

A pending order only defines trading conditions; execution is still affected by liquidity, gaps, spread, and broker execution rules. Especially for breakout pending orders in fast markets, the execution price after triggering may differ from the set price; stop loss also cannot guarantee that losses will be locked at an exact amount. Even if a pullback pending order is executed, price may continue to move against the position. Before placing an order, first calculate the lot size and worst acceptable loss according to the account contract specifications, and recheck the spread and order status before news or market open.
