October 28 Gold Strategy Watch: After the Overnight High, How to Distinguish a Breakout from a Pullback?
Kitco's Beijing time 09:32 spot reference bid is 4054.80 USD/oz, below the 08:55 snapshot. Using yesterday's high and low and this morning's verified quotes as historical references, discuss the confirmation and invalidation conditions for a breakout and a pullback, as well as the risks before the policy meeting.

Today's strategy watch first locks onto the same data source. The Kitco gold spot page showed, at New York time October 27 21:32 and Beijing time October 28 09:32, a bid of 4054.80 USD/oz and an ask of 4056.80 USD/oz; another price note on the page is marked as of 21:31 EDT, a one-minute difference between the two. It lists October 27's historical intraday low of 3988.50 and high of 4071.60 USD/oz. This site's morning report at Beijing time 08:55 cited the same source's bid of 4064.60 USD/oz; the two snapshots differ by 9.80 USD, indicating some retracement during this short period, and one cannot conclude from this that the whole day will fall. Kitco's public spot price is not the tradable Bid/Ask of the broker's XAUUSD; each platform's quotes, spreads, and server time zones must be checked separately.
First Draw the Observation Band, Then Discuss Support and Resistance
On the upside, 4064.60 to 4071.60 USD/oz can first be treated as a historical observation band: the front end is this morning's same-source snapshot position, and the back end is yesterday's page high. It shows that price once approached this range, but does not prove that the entire band has been rejected multiple times, so it can only be called a candidate resistance zone. On the downside, 4000 to 3988.50 USD/oz is treated as a farther reference zone: 4000 is only a round psychological threshold, while 3988.50 is the verifiable yesterday low; there is no verified dense trading basis between the two, so it should not be drawn as precise support. The current price is still far from the downside reference zone; if a new Asian session low appears, the near-term observation position should first be updated using completed candles on the same platform.
These two ranges apply only to the same Kitco quote source and should not be copied directly next to the MT4 trading button. After opening your own XAUUSD chart, first record the platform name, instrument suffix, server time, Bid and Ask, and then re-mark that platform's yesterday high and low. If the platform has a fixed deviation from Kitco or a significantly wider spread, the reference zones must also be replaced with that platform's actual high and low, rather than mechanically applying the above numbers.
Scenario One: Breakout Above the Upper Range
If your platform's completed candles move above the corresponding platform's yesterday high, then a retest still holds above the high and a higher low appears, a bullish breakout can be listed as a candidate interpretation. It is best to also observe whether the spread returns to its usual level, to avoid mistaking a single wick or quote jump for an established new trend. The invalidation condition for this scenario is that price falls back into the original high range and stays there, subsequent highs gradually decline, or the actual tradable price no longer matches the risk budget. Once the breakout is invalidated, the label "already broken out" should be withdrawn, and the observation line must not be quietly moved upward.
Scenario Two: Pullback from Highs
If price approaches the upper candidate zone multiple times but fails to hold on completed candles, and then falls below the near-term low confirmed during today's Asian session on the same platform, observe whether the pullback forms lower highs. The 4000 to 3988.50 levels below are only farther historical references, not targets the pullback must reach. If price below the near-term low is quickly reclaimed and moves back into the upper candidate zone, the bearish interpretation is invalidated; if the farther prior low is touched, the spread and whether price truly holds below it must also be rechecked, and a rebound must not be presumed.
Boundaries Before the Policy Meeting
The Federal Reserve's official calendar shows the policy decision is expected to be announced at 14:00 US Eastern time on October 28, with the press conference at 14:30, approximately 02:00 and 02:30 Beijing time on the 29th. As of this article, the result has not yet occurred. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics also schedules regional employment data for release today at 10:00 US Eastern time, approximately 22:00 Beijing time. Spreads, slippage, and volatility around data releases may change the original conditions. This article only provides an observation framework as of the 09:32 snapshot and does not provide definitive trade calls; if the market changes significantly later, this article should be updated with the new time and quotes clearly marked, rather than issuing another same-day strategy.
