October 18 Gold Strategy Watch: Re-sample at the Open First, Old Range Awaits Validation
Closed-market reference figures are unchanged and cannot be treated as new signals; organize breakout, pullback, and post-gap invalidation checks around the old range, and wait for valid quotes to resume.

This is a delayed update of today's strategy column, checked in the afternoon Beijing time. No new valid trading sequence has been obtained on Sunday, so the focus is on how to re-validate the old range after next week's open, rather than manufacturing instant weekend price levels. The edge observation conditions proposed yesterday can be retained, but it is first necessary to check whether quotes have truly resumed and whether price has already left the original research environment.
First distinguish page time from trade time
The body of this Kitco page is marked New York, October 18, 05:25 EDT, corresponding to 17:25 Beijing time, showing spot gold bid 4164.10, ask 4166.10 USD per troy ounce, range 4146.60 to 4199.50. The top shows 05:26; this article records the page state using the body time.
These values are consistent with the weekend page saved the previous day and cannot prove that new trades occurred on Sunday. For now they can only be treated as references retained during the market closure, and cannot be called executable quotes at 17:25 or official weekly settlement prices. Spreads, contracts, and daily boundaries for XAUUSD may differ across platforms; next week it will be necessary to verify normal quotes on the platform used.
Old edges retained as candidates, not automatically upgraded
4145 to 4150 corresponds to near the reference lower edge of 4146.60, and 4195 to 4200 corresponds to near the upper edge of 4199.50. These two groups are observation bands rounded around the endpoints, not order-book evidence, nor strong support and resistance validated by multiple touches.
There is no new price evidence today, so the same set of values is not repackaged as a "stronger signal." The next step is first to determine whether price after trading resumes is inside the old range, above it, or below it. If the open is far from the old edges, continuing to wait for the original conditions may no longer be appropriate, and a new reference should be established.
Breakout scenario: first see whether evidence remains after crossing
If, after normal quotes resume, price approaches and crosses above the 4195 to 4200 observation band, record the crossing time, the platform used, and the observation timeframe. Only if price subsequently continues to trade outside the old upper edge and does not immediately lose support when revisiting the edge should the possibility of upward extension continue to be studied.
The invalidation condition is price returning inside the old range and subsequently being unable to resume trading outside the upper edge; if the crossing appears only in abnormal spreads or isolated quotes, it is also not treated as confirmation. Without a new price structure, this article sets no definite upside target, and certainly does not equate merely crossing 4200 with a certain rise.
Pullback scenario: a recovery process is needed near the lower edge
If price pulls back to near 4145 to 4150 after the open, observe whether the decline slows, whether price returns above the observation band, and whether the recovery can subsequently be retained. This is a set of conditions awaiting validation, not an instruction to buy on touch. Without a recovery process, price cannot first be labeled as having valid support.
If price continues to trade outside the old lower edge, or briefly rebounds and then loses it again, the assumption of range support should be withdrawn. Withdrawal does not equal an automatic bearish conclusion; it only indicates that the original evidence is insufficient and a new structure must be awaited. If price never approaches the lower edge, record it as the scenario not triggered.
After a gap, re-sample first
If trading resumes with a clear gap away from the old range, prioritize recording the new bid/ask quotes, spread, and time, and do not treat the weekend retained price as a starting point that can necessarily be filled. Risk estimates should also be rechecked: planned exit prices do not guarantee actual execution prices, and gaps or liquidity changes may cause differences.
During research, the abnormal opening state and the subsequent normal state can be stored separately, but do not select only the fragments that favor the old judgment. The observation timeframe should be consistent in advance, avoiding claiming success on a short timeframe and then switching to a long timeframe to hide failure. This article has not obtained complete new candlesticks, so it does not claim that a certain opening pattern has formed.
The opening record answers only three questions
First, is the old range still applicable? Second, which condition actually appeared? Third, what new evidence invalidates it? If these questions cannot yet be answered, record the observation state as waiting, rather than forcing a long or short choice just to give a direction every day.
This article has a different division of labor from the morning report's event calendar and retains only the opening validation framework. If reliable new market data appears later, the update time and reason for adjustment will be marked in the same article; later results will not be written as facts known over the weekend. All reference areas are for research and do not constitute definite buying or selling advice, nor do they promise returns.
