What Does It Cost to Hold Gold Overnight? Understanding XAUUSD Swap Fees and How to Reconcile Them

Overnight swap fees differ from spreads and commissions. Check long and short rates, calculation units, three-day settlement and server time against MT4 contract specifications, then compare with your actual statement.

Holding a gold position overnight may cost more than the spread visible at entry. Some XAUUSD contracts incur an overnight swap fee, also called a rollover or financing charge. It may be a debit, or it may be recorded as a positive number under the product rules; the same fee table cannot be applied across different platforms, accounts and contracts. The real question is not "how much will definitely be charged tonight," but how to find the settlement basis before holding a position and how to reconcile the statement afterward.

First, distinguish three types of costs

The spread is the trading cost reflected between bid and ask quotes, commission may be listed separately, and the overnight swap fee relates to a position crossing the platform's specified settlement time. Conflating these three can make a trade that appears directionally correct produce an unexpected net result. Position P&L also changes with price, and margin is only collateral funds occupied, not a fee already paid.

For example, purely to illustrate the accounting relationship: suppose a hypothetical trade has price-change P&L of positive 20 account currency units, spread and commission totaling 8, cumulative overnight fees of negative 5, and all other items zero, then the net amount is positive 7. All numbers here are teaching assumptions; they are neither the current gold price, actual rates, nor a settlement promise from any specific platform. If the trade record already reflects the spread in the execution price difference, do not manually deduct it again during review; first check how each column of the platform report is defined.

What to look at in MT4 contract specifications

MetaTrader 4 official help states that in the Market Watch window, opening a symbol's "Specification" or "Properties" lets you view Swap type, Swap long, Swap short, and fields such as contract size. Swap long corresponds to buy positions, Swap short to sell positions; the two directions may differ, so you should not look at only one number. Swap type explains whether these values are calculated in points, currency or percentage. Taking only the Swap long number while forgetting the unit, lot size and account currency makes it impossible to derive your actual debit.

Some platforms also list the settlement day for "three-day swap." It is used to handle settlement arrangements on non-trading days, and the phrase "always triple on Wednesday" cannot be used to draw conclusions for all gold contracts. First check the specific weekday, server settlement time and holiday schedule for that symbol at the time, then consider whether your position crosses that time. Server time is also not necessarily equal to midnight Beijing time.

Order of checks before holding a position

Step one: confirm the exact symbol name and suffix, account type, buy/sell direction, lot size and contract unit; XAUUSD, XAUUSDm or other names may not follow the same rules. Step two: open the current day's contract specifications and record the long and short swap rates, calculation type, three-day settlement day, account currency and server time. Step three: check the platform's latest fee description to confirm whether rates will be updated and when they take effect; if the materials contradict each other, ask platform customer service and save the reply, rather than inferring current rates from old screenshots.

Step four: first estimate how many settlement points the position will cross, then make a scenario budget. The budget should include possible fee changes from normal days and three-day settlement, and leave room for currency conversion or rate changes. This is a risk estimate, not a guarantee of future debits. If the platform does not provide clear units and calculation methods, you cannot simply multiply a displayed negative number by the number of holding days.

How to reconcile after holding a position

The positions column in the MT4 trading terminal usually has a Swap column, and closed trades should be checked in account history or the platform's official statement. Record the order number, symbol, direction, open and close times, lot size, each overnight settlement, commission and final net amount. If fees differ from expectations, first check whether a three-day settlement was crossed, whether the contract specifications were updated during the period, and whether account currency conversion occurred, then ask the platform for the calculation basis.

"The price moved the right way" and "net return is positive" are two separate questions for the same trade. Overnight fees can change the cost boundary of a position, but should not alone determine whether to continue bearing price risk. Leveraged trading can cause significant losses; this article only explains reconciliation methods and does not provide real-time rates or trading advice.
