How to Verify Gold Holding Costs: Don't Miss Overnight Fees, and Don't Double-Count the Spread
Distinguish price P&L, commissions, and holding costs, explain the net result through a hypothetical statement, and verify direction, units, and settlement timing to avoid double-counting fees.

Even if the gold direction is correct, the final account result may be less than expected. The reason is not necessarily a quote error; it may also be that overnight fees incurred during the holding period were not included in the original budget. This article discusses how to verify this cost. It does not provide any platform's current rates, nor does it generalize one platform's rules as an industry-wide standard.
Look at Overnight Fees Separately from Price P&L
For products that use an overnight settlement arrangement, after crossing the specified settlement time, the account may incur a fee or credit that is independent of price changes. The Swap field commonly seen in the terminal belongs to this type of record. It is not equal to the spread, nor should it be directly treated as a commission.
Similar names do not mean all contracts are calculated the same way. Whether it applies, how it is calculated, and at what point it is recorded must all be checked against the terms for the corresponding instrument and account. When you see a negative number, first confirm whether it represents a single rate or a cumulative amount, to avoid adding different fields together.
First Verify Direction and Units
Contract specifications may list overnight parameters separately for long and short positions. You cannot infer that selling will necessarily receive an equal income just because buying is charged; nor can you add the numbers for both directions together and calculate it as the cost of a one-way position.
Another easily overlooked point is units. The displayed value may need to be converted according to point value, quantity, or another specified calculation method. You cannot determine which is cheaper just by looking at the size of the number. First write down the pricing unit, lot size basis, and account currency, then compare; if any one of these is missing, do not calculate an exact amount for now.
Teaching Example: Put Costs Back into the Net Result
The following is a hypothetical statement, not a platform quote: a trade has price P&L of positive 120 account currency units, with commission expense of 8 listed separately and holding cost expense of 12. If the price P&L has already been calculated based on the actual execution price, and there are no other items, then the net result corresponding to this trade is 120 minus 8 minus 12, which equals 100.
At this point, you cannot deduct again the spread that is already included in the execution price. Conversely, if you are using a theoretical price difference that does not include execution costs, you need to restate the cost basis. Clarifying what each column already includes is more accurate than simply deducting every fee name once.
How Long You Hold Is Not Just About Calendar Days
When verifying overnight recording, you need to confirm the platform's settlement time and server time, rather than only checking whether it is past midnight on your own phone. Weekends, holidays, and multi-day accruals may use different arrangements. Without verification, you cannot stipulate that all gold contracts are uniformly charged at a fixed multiple on a certain day.
Short holding periods may also cross the settlement point, while longer holding periods may not yet have crossed the corresponding time. This is not a uniform operating rule, but a reminder to verify opening and closing times together with the contract terms. If rates change, keep the records from that time; do not use today's parameters to replace historical statements.
No Overnight Fee Does Not Automatically Mean Zero Cost
If an account advertises no overnight fees, you still need to verify the applicable instruments, holding period, and whether other charging conditions exist. You cannot assume all holdings are permanently free based only on the name, nor can you conversely assume that any swap-free account has hidden charges.
The basis for judgment should be the complete terms and the actual statement. If there are questions about either, organize the instrument, direction, quantity, opening and closing times, and related records, and ask the service provider about the specific calculation process; do not submit passwords or other login credentials.
Review a Cost Checklist Weekly
You can list price P&L, commissions, holding costs, and other verified adjustments separately, marking positive and negative signs and currency. After totaling them item by item, reconcile with the net change in the account; deposits, withdrawals, and transfers between accounts need to be excluded separately and cannot be mixed in as trading performance.
Fees will change the net result of a method, but low fees alone do not guarantee profit. This article does not recommend a fixed holding period, nor does it suggest ignoring existing risk conditions in order to reduce a certain fee. Leveraged trading can cause significant losses. The purpose of understanding the statement is to make trading results explainable and verifiable.
