October 28 Gold Evening Review: Before the Fed Decision, Separate the Known from the Unconfirmed

As of 21:00 Beijing time, verify the Kitco gold quote snapshot and the official Federal Reserve schedule, and sort out tonight's market divergence and key points for next-day review; do not write the rate decision outcome in advance.

As of 21:00 Beijing time on October 28, the most important backdrop for gold tonight remains the Federal Reserve's rate decision, which has not yet been announced. At this point the New York trading session has only just begun, so daytime fluctuations cannot be written up as the U.S. closing trend, nor can market speculation be written up as announced policy. The following only reviews quotes and schedule items that can be verified, and separates the different paths that may emerge later.

Price position as of publication

The Kitco spot gold page showed that at 08:06 New York time on October 28, i.e. 20:06 Beijing time, gold's bid was USD 4,047.40 per ounce and ask was USD 4,049.40, with the day's range listed on the page at USD 4,027.30 to 4,071.60. This price is a Kitco spot quote snapshot, not an XAUUSD execution price from EBC or any other broker, nor an instant execution at exactly 21:00. As of this article's publication, the latest verifiable snapshot still has a time lag, so it cannot be claimed that gold is at a precise level at this moment.

Compared with the change from the previous reference quote on the same page, Kitco showed a decline of 0.29% at that time. This indicates that as of that snapshot, gold had not extended the previous trading day's upside; however, there was still wide fluctuation between the intraday high and low, and a single percentage is not enough to explain the full-day direction of funds. This morning the website already discussed historical lows and the upper observation band; in the evening, more attention should be paid to whether price remains within the original range around the news, rather than treating the morning level as support and resistance that never expires.

What the market is waiting for

The official Federal Reserve calendar lists a two-day meeting on October 27-28, with the decision at 14:00 U.S. Eastern Time on October 28 and a press conference at 14:30. Converted according to late-October New York daylight saving time, these are 02:00 and 02:30 Beijing time on October 29. This article is written before these times, so the final decision or the chair's remarks are not known.

Market divergence is not only about "hike or no hike." Even if the target rate remains unchanged, the statement's wording on inflation, growth and the subsequent policy path may also change expectations for the dollar and Treasury yields; if the wording differs from expectations, gold may see rapid moves in both directions. Conversely, if the decision meets expectations, the price jump in the first few minutes may not represent the full reaction. The above are observation scenarios, not market facts that have already occurred.

Two observation frameworks for tonight

In the first case, if after the announcement gold breaks out of the intraday range formed before the news and holds outside the range across several subsequent closes on the same timeframe, then check whether the dollar and yields provide a same-direction backdrop; if it quickly returns to the range, the idea of breakout continuation should be reassessed. In the second case, if gold first drops sharply and then returns to the original range, distinguish between spread and slippage at the moment of the news; do not use only a wick on the chart to conclude that support is valid; if it again falls out of the range and cannot recover, the idea of a return to range trading also fails. The range mentioned here is an observation method, not a definite entry, stop-loss or take-profit price.

What to review the next day

On the morning of the 29th Beijing time, first compare with the Federal Reserve's official statement and press conference content, then check changes in gold, the dollar and yields on the same time scale before and after the announcement. Pay special attention to whether the initial move reverses, and whether quotes and execution costs across different platforms widen. If there is no synchronized, verifiable data, it is better to retain the conclusion "cannot yet be determined" than to pick a segment of candlesticks afterward and assemble it into inevitable causation.
